Recognising that learning does not only occur in the classroom, students at Chanel College have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities on retreat, camps, excursions and tours.
ACTS Camp
ACTS Camp provides students in Year 10 (A Chance To Share) and Year 11 (A Chance To Serve)
with the opportunity to gather with young people from the Diocese of Rockhampton. The Camps, held in Yeppoon, help students to build confidence and to explore questions about faith and life.
Catholic Education Rockhampton Youth Pilgrimage
Over one weekend in May each year students in Years 10, 11 and 12 join with students from across the Diocese at the Catholic Education Rockhampton Youth Pilgrimage. The Youth Pilgrimage is hosted by The Cathedral College, Rockhampton.
Retreats
Chanel College believes that retreats are an integral part of the life-long faith formation of young people.
Retreats provide students with Gospel-centered formation experiences through which their spiritual growth is nurtured as they grow in understanding of their Christian faith.
All students attend a Retreat during the year. Our Retreat Program focuses on bringing the Gospel into contemporary culture in a way that engages and empowers young people.
The theme of each Year Level retreat is designed to meet the needs of students at that stage of their secondary education:
- Year 7 – Belonging to the Chanel College community
- Year 8 – Middle Year Student Leaders Retreat
- Year 9 – Discovering God given gifts
- Year 10 – Building Relationships
- Year 11 – Servant Leadership
- Year 12 – To Love and be Loved
Immersion Experiences
Immersion experiences involve students in a social justice experience that has practical applications. They are important because they provide students with an opportunity to embrace servant leadership and to work to respond to the needs of others.
Traditionally, teachers and students from Chanel College have travelled to the remote mountain village of Baguia in East Timor. From there they made the four-hour walk to the Aleita School to meet with the children, teachers and parents.
While Chanel College continues to make financial contributions to the school in Aleita, we are currently exploring new places for immersion in Asia and in remote communities in Australia.
Japanese Cultural Immersion
The study of Japanese is an integral part of the curriculum at Chanel College. As part of our language program, students are given the opportunity to take part in a two-week cultural immersion in Japan. This trip usually takes place during the Term 2 holidays.
Students spend some time with a Japanese host family and attend school. They also participate in traditional activities such as calligraphy and tea ceremonies.
also spend time traveling as a group visiting cities such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. They also visit significant cultural sites such as the Peace Park in Hiroshima where they add 1000 origami paper cranes made by members of the Chanel College community to the thousands already placed there as a symbol of peace.
New Zealand Ski Trip
Confidence, self-esteem, discipline, cooperation, responsibility and leadership – as well as the opportunity to experience snow, learn how to ski and go snow-boarding – are the qualities and characteristics that are enhanced and developed on the annual ski trip to the ski fields of New Zealand’s South Island.
The ski trip takes place in the September school holidays – the optimum time for visitors from the Tropics to ‘hit’ the ski slopes.
