NEWSLETTER WEEK 2
16 OCTOBER 2020

Principal
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
The celebration of student achievement last week was like no other in the fifty-four year history of Chanel College. An awards ceremony for each year level, live-streamed via our Facebook page, represented just another of the adjustments to our usual way of doing things that has been necessitated by the response to the Covid-19 pandemic that has impacted on so many aspects of our lives this year. While much has changed, each awards ceremony last week was testament to the fact that our students have achieved our ideal that they be ‘Respectful, Responsible, Resilient Learners’ who always do their best, aiming for excellence and avoiding mediocrity.
Each day we were able to celebrate student achievement in all areas of College life – across academic, co-curricular and sporting pursuits. We warmly congratulate all students who received awards.
I thank Ms Wolffe for her leadership in the organisation of the ceremonies. Events such as this one can only happen because of the work of many, so I also add a special “thank you” to all members of staff who supported Ms Wolffe in bringing everything together for this event. In particular, I acknowledge the work done by Mr Bobby Fisher who ensured that the live-streaming went smoothly and Mrs Stacy Berry who was our photographer. Our Middle Years Leaders – Jade McErlain, Brady Blake and Jack Ellis, along with our 2021 College Captains, Louis Romagnalo and Charlise Falconer, did a wonderful job in introducing the celebrations.
It was also very exciting to be able to showcase our Flute and Strings Ensembles, Concert and Rock Bands. Each performance was fabulous and showed how far our Instrumental Music Program has come in just 12 months – with several weeks lost while we were learning from home. I was immensely proud of our musicians and must acknowledge and thank Mrs Slow, Mrs Berry, Mrs Rippingale and our IM Tutors, for the wonderful work that they have done, and continue to do, to provide our students with every opportunity to engage with this important aspect of the cultural life of our College.
Thank you to all parents and friends of Chanel College who joined us via the live stream for this celebration and to all students for their attentiveness during each ceremony.
And, finally, a huge “Congratulations” to all award recipients. We are very proud of your achievements in this 2020 school year. In the face of challenging times, you have done well … you have done your best … you have succeeded!
A Full list of Award Recipients for Years 7 – 11 will be published in this Newsletter.

Student Leaders’ Retreat
Our newly appointed Student Leaders for 2021 participated in their two day retreat at the Parish Centre on 15 and 16 October. The retreat provided time for the group to realise and acknowledge their own and each other’s gifts and talents as they prepare to lead and serve Chanel College next year. They also had the opportunity to plan the student led activities that will happen in Term 1
Year 7 Retreat Day
On 19 October, Year 7 students experienced their second retreat day for this year. The day was held in the Marian Centre and students enjoyed a pizza and watermelon lunch. Michael Fitzpatrick from Belum Pty Ltd was the presenter for the day. The retreat focussed on enhancing resilience and self-esteem through the student’s awareness of God’s unconditional love and acceptance of them. Also, they were encouraged to make connections between their day-to-day life and faith in God.
Mission Month – October
This year World Mission Month focuses on the essential work of priests, religious and lay missionaries in Cambodia, supporting people with disability and their families.
For over 20 years, Bishop Enrique “Kike” Figaredo Alvargonzalez and his team in the Apostolic Prefecture of Battambang have been working to advocate for people with disability, providing support such as healthcare, food, financial assistance and education.
Bishop “Kike” also features in an inspirational video produced by Catholic Mission, that connects mission partners across the world. More than 30 missionaries based in over 25 different countries speak of hope in a variety of languages. At its heart though, the video, launched as part of World Mission Month, has a simple message, but with great impact: #We are Still Here.

2021 COLLEGE LEADERS
Congratulations to the 2021 College Leaders. We are very proud of all the students who have taken on these roles and know they will lead our College Community with Justice, Respect and Compassion.

LATEST NEWS
What have the Student’s been up to?

In Term 3, Chanel’s Interact Club organised a drive to collect school supplies for The Smith Family. The Smith Family represents over 600 children in the Gladstone area who are experiencing disadvantages. Throughout Australia, 1 in 6 children live in poverty, and limited access to school supplies has a detrimental effect on their ability to engage in and succeed at school. Supplying stationery, pencils, and other basic school needs, gives these children the opportunity to feel included and more confident about their school experiences. Carlie Busby and Rebecca Whittaker from The Smith Family Gladstone, came to Chanel today to receive the donations of the supplies that were generously donated by Chanel’s families. The Interact Club thanks everyone who donated to this worthy cause, and is pleased to be able to provide assistance to other students who are in need.
We congratulate our College students on this amazing achievement.

During anti-poverty week, McAuley 2 asked the Chanel College Community to take action and Stand Up against poverty so that the world’s poor can have a voice too.
Poverty is created by the actions of people, which means it can be eradicated – it is not a question of if, but when. But for this to happen we must all work together towards the creation of a more just and fairer world.
It is not right that over 3 million Australians are living below the poverty line; that is 1 in 8 people!
By standing in solidarity with those living in poverty members of McAuley 2 hope that they have inspired everyone to take action for a just world.

The Year 10 Social Studies students have been investigating pandemics throughout history whilst researching how they arise, the way they are spread, and how authorities have dealt with them once they reach pandemic level.
During class the students took on the roles of city officials and worked in groups to save the citizens of their city from the rising threat of a zombie invasion. As the virus spread through the population and panic set in, how would they best protect their city and save the citizens who weren’t infected, while somehow also trying to control and contain the rapidly-spreading virus.
Very lively and interesting debate ensued, as the students tried to reach their objectives.
